Steep Snow Ridge, somewhere in Alps

INTRODUCTORY SNOW AND ICE
Introductory snow and ice instruction offers beginners a solid foundation of basic snow and ice climbing skills. It covers the use of technical equipment, rope handling, knot tying, communication, belaying, glissading and rappelling. You will learn basic and advanced ice axe and crampon technique in addition to the use of ice screws, snow and ice bollards, and natural protection. We begin climbing the first day, starting with low angle snow and ice and develop to higher angle terrain. All climbs are carefully chosen to allow each student to feel secure while being challenged. We recommend an introductory course for beginning ice climbers and mountaineers including those with rock experience. Two or more days (they need not be consecutive) will help you retain the information offered. However, a single day of instruction is appropriate if you just want to give the winter experience a try while having a great time.

INTERMEDIATE ICE
Intermediate ice instruction is suitable for students who have taken the introductory snow and ice course, or who have otherwise developed a solid foundation of basic snow and ice techniques. It further develops each student's understanding of all aspects of ice climbing and mixed climbing in preparation for advanced courses, trips and perhaps, independence. We help you refine your climbing technique emphasizing footwork, balance, tool placement, rest positions, anchors on steep ice and evaluation of steep ice conditions. You learn increasingly advanced techniques on progressively steeper and more challenging multi-pitch ice climbs. We recommend at least two days of instruction. However, you will find a single day of instruction to be of great value.

MOUNTAINEERING
This course covers the material in the Snow and Ice Course and will build on those skills providing a great introduction to the world of mountaineering. Topics include mixed climbing, short roping, avalanche awareness, weather, route planning, route finding and descents. These skills will be applied on long climbs in a mountain setting. The focus is on safety and efficiency in the mountain environment and can include winter camping skills.

WINTER ASCENT OF MT.WASHINGTON
This demanding and spectacular climb ascends the Lion’s Head Trail to the summit of New England’s Highest Mountain (6288 ft). The route is largely above treeline and is thus exposed to very severe winter conditions. We will cover the skills required for winter mountaineering that includes the use of crampons and an ice axe. No previous experience is necessary. You should, however, be physically fit. We supply crampons, ice axe and boots if needed.

PRESIDENTIAL RANGE TRAVERSE
This four day route follows a ridge which is largely above tree line. It is therefore exposed to the full severity of winter conditions. You will learn winter mountaineering skills, including the use of crampons, ice axe and other technical gear. This expedition is recommended to seasoned backpackers with snow camping experience. Please call or write for details.

SKI THE WHITE MOUNTAINS OF NH
Our own White Mountains offers excellent ski-touring and ski mountaineering, from a simple day tour to multi day mountain tours. We can take you off the beaten path and away from groomed 'touring centers'. Either Nordic or alpine touring equipment can be used, although specific tours are best suited to one or the other. Call or write for details.
